What you'll need:
- String or yarn
- hex nuts, beads, or anything with a hole in it you feel would look nice on a bracelet (Have fun with it!)
- tape
- a clasp if you really want it
PROCESS:
- Cut three equal lengths of the string.
- Tie these three in a knot
- Tape that knot down. Firmly. With the tape. It's going to want to come off the table once you start working with it so this is actually a very serious step. (Actually it's not life-or-death so don't sweat it.)
- Start braiding. I don't really know how to explain braiding, but there are lots of great tutorials on the internet and if you ask around I'm sure you have a friend who knows how to braid.
- Once you've braided a bit of the string, maybe around a third, tie another knot separating the braided section from the rest.
- Slide a bead/anything with hole onto all three strands or as many as possible.
- Knot it off again.
- Repeat 6 and 7 until you have as many bead things as desired.
- Braid the rest of the string until it's the length you want it to be.
- Now it's honesty time. I'm horrible at tying of things. I just can't do it. So, if you got a clasp, just tie it on to the strings and you're done. If you didn't, I just tied my bracelet onto my wrist loose enough to be able to untie it.
- There are different ways to do this. One way I tried was to follow the original tutorial where you don't tie any knots on except for the ends. You just braid and slide the beads/nuts on as you go. This looks good, except it's really hard to space them right (it's hard to make them look even). You have to keep track of the strands you are braiding and make sure they stay tight as well as maneuver beads on.
- I used cheap plastic thread on my bracelet, which I am ashamed of, however it was for a good reason. I did a couple bracelets to see what would work best and did not want to waste good string.
- I realize there is a distinct lack of pictures in this post, I was having formatting issues. I will post an update blog with lots of photos I promise! In the meantime if you have any question feel free to post them in the comments.

- VOILA! A bracelet that will forever mark your friendship. Or at least validate it's there because they're wearing an... interesting... bracelet that you've made.
- A couple notes:

Yay friendship! Haha, love how you made the bracelets for yourself. I also commend your color choice. I've never made bracelets with the plastic thread, though I have tried out making lanyard fish and such with similar materials. I've also never tried just braiding it -- I usually went for the conventional knot style -- but either way I feel the urgency of taping dem suckers down.
ReplyDeleteI thought the number of pictures was fine as is, and I especially like the touch of having the multicolored beads in the background of the first one.
The hex nut bracelet! I have long awaited this post. I think that this bracelet is just so creative and adorable!
ReplyDeleteFriendship bracelets were essential when I was in middle school. Every best friend had one, and we enjoyed making them. Every once in a while I will still enjoy braiding bracelets, but I usually loose patience before I finish one. Maybe I should try to conquer this beaded bracelet idea.
Pretty! I remember a big friendship pin trend when I was in junior high. We'd decorate safety pins with colored beads and give them to our friends. Then we'd pin the to our shoelaces (which must've looked really weird, but at the time we all thought it was awesome). I'd forgotten all about this, but reading this post brought it back.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like the bracelets you made turned out nicely! I really like the idea of friendship bracelets, and braiding your own and being able to decorate them uniquely is a nice touch. Your steps for making them seem straightforward and I've been on kind of a jewelry kick lately, so maybe I'll try making some myself! Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteReading this post reminds me of the bracelet-braiding sessions my friends and I used to have in elementary school. It took me forever to master the simple four-string braid and I mainly used that pattern for my bracelets. It never occurred to me to decorate them with beads and hex nuts though. Your hex nut bracelet looks really nice!
