2. Take you rug and place it in the corner. (If you don't have a rug skip this step)
3. For some privacy, take the sheets or pieces of fabric and hang them in the corner leaving enough space for the chair. I put my sheets up with wall tacks, but you could use hooks or towel holding mounts for more stability. (you will need a drill if you're going to use towel mounts)
4. This step is completely optional. I think that if you're spending time alone reading or in a contemplative hibernating state, it's best to be surrounded by memories and fun stuff. And so, the photo wall is born! Just stick a bunch of photos and drawings up on a wall in your corner. (I have magnetic paint so this is easy for me, but tape or tacks work just as well)

6. Add a shelf or side-table. (I also put an ottoman with storage in it just for good measure)
7. Fill the shelf with timeless books and other reading materials (I have the Harry Potter series and Batgirl comics)8. If you don't want to read in the dark, it's probably a good idea to put a lamp in there somewhere. Otherwise, the shelf/table is a clean template for whatever awesomeness you want to put on it.
Tada! A fabulous new reading nook!
I am quite please with the way my corner turned out. Eventually it might become more elaborate, but until then it's exceedingly cozy and great for when I'm feeling especially philosophical.
Until my next project, keep up the hard work!

I absolutely LOVE this. I like what you're doing with font sizes and colors on the post, and everything about this nook. It looks so cozy. I used to hole down in a basement closet to read and play with marbles while eating Thin Mints, but never had anything this classy. I would only worry about falling asleep while reading in such a comfortable-looking space!
ReplyDeleteLove the owl, the patterns, everything. It looks like a place where you'll be able to spend some nicely isolated hours. Gut gemacht!
Brigitte! This is so cute! I want to do this in my room. But what is magnetic paint? And where can I get some? I hate putting tape on my walls, and if this magnetic paint you speak of is anything like I imagine, then it sounds like it would be perfect! Last, but certainly not least, great choice in literature. I look forward to reading your future posts.
ReplyDeleteMagnetic paint is normal paint that has iron shavings in it. You paint your walls with it and it acts as a primer. After it's up you can just paint over it. I'm pretty sure you can buy it at Wal-Mart or any store that sells paint like Home Depot.
DeleteThe magnetic primer you can buy at most DIY places is NOT very good. When Brigitte and I repainted her room a few years ago, I researched it on the net, and ordered it.
DeleteYou will have to put several coats of primer on the wall, AND get the super-strong neodymium magnets to use, but it works pretty well. Definitely saves you from the dreaded tape-residue issue!
So lovely and cute! What a great idea, I've never thought of doing that. You did a really good job on decorating the nook! I love how everything is pink, haha.It looks like the perfect place to snuggle up and read a good book, especially with fall and cold weather coming. I MUST do that sometime, when the chance comes. Thanks Brigitte, I look forward to your future posts!
ReplyDeleteFascinating! I'm piqued by your construction. I have not taken the time to really construct something since I glued together a birdhouse from a kit at a Home Depot Saturday morning workshop in grade school. I don't have any free space that I can use for a nook (which I probably would not use anyway), but I sometimes think how in the future I could build a fireproof, floodproof, theftproof, lightningproof, earthquakeproof, alien invasionproof, secure home data server / storage unit. (Yeah.)
ReplyDeleteIt would be a really expensive project, but do-able. Just make a room similar to a bank vault. Unless there is a fire/water/thief/alien already in the room, nothing can get to the servers. Well, maybe aliens. I'm not sure about them.
DeleteI love this! Especially because I love decorating shows and this had the same feel. You did a really nice job of explaining the steps and putting up pictures so that almost anyone could try it.
ReplyDeleteBrigitte, this is amazing! I'm quite the fan of nooks in general, as one can tell from looking at my Pinterest. (Fan of nooks...does that sound weird to say? No matter, it's true. A cozy spot can be just the remedy for a less-than-perfect day.) In any case, this was a great project, and I might have to try it for myself someday soon. I feel the need for a place when I'm in a philosophical mood, too.
ReplyDeleteI not only loved the idea and execution, but your writing in this post was excellent as well. You include some humor in your descriptions and instructions, which was lovely. I particularly enjoyed that the first instruction included resolving to make your corner fabulous. Quite the important step.
I can't wait to see what project you do next!
What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteNow I want a reading nook. If only my room were a little bit bigger. I find reading nooks to be very useful on rainy days when all you want to do is curl up under a fuzzy blanket and read a book. When I get my own house, someday, I will make sure it has a cozy reading nook positioned beside a second floor window.
I also think that not only houses, but any decent library has a reading nook. One reason I love libraries is because many of them abound with cozy chairs in which one can read any book you want.
Many times as I browse the internet, usually through StumbleUpon, I find pictures of these beautiful couches and chairs positioned in perfect reading nooks, or of libraries with bookshelves to the ceiling just like in the Disney movie "Beauty and the Beast." I could go on forever if I were to completely describe my love for books and a perfect reading nook. Nice post Brigitte!
